SEACORN provides a fundamental contribution to the evaluation and development of Enhanced UMTS networks. Enhanced UMTS is a UMTS evolution step which provides bit rates higher than 2Mbit/s in the uplink and downlink directions over a 5MHz frequency carrier, enabling the provision of new wideband services and a significant reduction of the price per bit, running over flexible QoS enabled IP based Access and Core networks, and making possible an effective end-to-end packet based transmission. SEACORN covers several aspects starting from the definition and characterisation of services and user profiles, including the modelling of the user's behaviour with respect to mobility and multimedia activity, and finally considering the optimisation of the network from both points of view: the operator's and manufacturer's view of limiting the infrastructure and maintenance costs and the user's view of being provided with high quality services (at reasonable costs implicitly given by the first point). |
